The Planned American Premiere of ›Bärenhäuter‹

An official souvenir program from the New York Wagnerian Opera Company was offered for sale on ebay in December 2010. This amply illustrated rare document of the today forgotten yet once important opera company reveals their scheduled 1923-1924 season which would have featured productions led by Siegfried Wagner, Josef Stransky and Eduard Moerike. In addition to the Richard Wagnerian repertoire, this booklet describes planned performances of works by Mozart (including the first American production of »Abduction from the Seraglio«), Wilhelm Kienzl, Eugene d’Albert and Siegfried Wagner’s DER BÄRENHÄUTER.

This would have been the first American production and one of its performances would have been conducted by the composer. Named among the performing artists in the company roster are Ottilie Metzger (the fírst interpreter of Urme in BRUDER LUSTIG), Heinrich Knote (a famous interpreter of the title role in DER BÄRENHÄUTER), Maria Lorentz Hoellischberg, Hanna Gonne, Theodor Lattermann, Ethel Frank and Benno Ziegler (Oswald in the world premiere of SCHWARZSCHWANENREICH). Particularly valuable are photos of the conductors and performers, synopses for each of the operas, and the casts for most of the productions.

Unfortunately, the BÄRENHÄUTER production was cancelled. Further plans that Siegfried Wagner should conduct the opera on his American tour were not realized.
